To start off the huge journey of finishing my dissertation, I decided to read books from different genre and with all sorts of diverse topics in order to collect more information on the topic I want to do. As a foreigner, I always like observing the cultural difference between the UK and my own country. One of the very interesting difference is defiantly the language which include all sorts of language like Slag, the tone, the meaning. However, I am intrigued by the body language people used when expressing themselves and it is also a vital element in communication to represent oneself.
Puppet is one of the known performance art that integrate human and objects to provide information. In the book 'The Puppet Show' has gathered a group of professional puppet artists and Jane Taylor is one of the experienced artists who is the Skye Chair of Dramatic Art at the University of the Witwatersrand. She is also a cultural theorist and has written extensively for both performance and fine arts. Taylor mentioned that 'The human is in some sense the necessary technology through which the "person" is realized, without which cannot exist.' The "person "here means the puppet and she has been emphasising the unbreakable relationship between the puppeteer and the puppet itself. She strongly believes that the human body could express a lot of emotion and information both with and without a tool. A successful puppet show allows audience forget the performers behind those puppets, simply believe that they can speak, they can react and they can feel because the puppets are alive with souls, enchanted by the human body language and the way projecting emotions to the object.
She also raised a question 'What is the relationship between the material and the ideal, or in more classical terms, between the body and the soul?' There have always been a clear bond between objects and concept, for example, dance. *(need more reference)In the past, dancing was a holy way to precious god. Human body was always the material, along with different gesture and rhythm to express emotion or to show gratefulness. (coming back to this blog with dance research)
Taylor also suggested that 'When working with puppet performance, there is automatically a somewhat diffuse field of emotional meaning that can be distributed across the puppeteers and puppets. This caries in degree depending on what kind of puppets are include, with differing levels of ambiguity being explored through each puppetry tradition.' This proof that tools have the ability to amplify human's emotion and to create their own language. (practical/experiment on using tools)
